The Great Lenore is...

"beautiful in the same way that J.D. Salinger's books are beautiful."

do you ever have a hard time writing?

I recently received an email that said this:

Just finished your beautiful book, and think I may immediately reread it. I loved the ending. I loved how it twisted in ways unexpected. Very smart, and well-written. So unlike everything else out there.

In response, I said (among sparse other things) this:

Each email such as yours is one more piece of encouragement to a young author (i.e., me), and is a reminder that magic was captured once at their desk, and can be captured there again.

Looking back on that email…that's a bit of a dour look on things - no? I mean, why would I need "encouragements" or "reminders," right?

But see, that's exactly the thing. That's where I have been with my writing lately - and that is truly how I have felt.

Why?

Because writing is not always easy. But what I am finding is that writing becomes a whole lot easier when you do two things:

1) Grab ahold of the encouragement that comes your way.

2) Write. Every day. No matter how you feel, and no matter how it is going.

How about you?
Do you ever have a hard time writing?
Do negative comments regarding your writing mess with you?
What have you found that makes writing easier?

  1. This is going to sound contrary to your post, but I don't think it is. Lately writing has been so easy for me. I'll sit down with the novel I'm working on, and will have 1k words on a page in thirty minutes, and to me they're quality words. It's messing with my head though. Making me doubt the work I've just produced. I think the way writers talk sometimes we brainwash ourselves into thinking that we have to labor and toil to produce that great piece of literature. With the story and words coming so easy it's making writing hard for me.

Guess there could be worse problems to have. ha.

  2. No problem writing...just pushing to get an agent. THat's where my insecurity lies.

  3. I am currently working on my first novel, and there are days when words just flow like a river, and then there are days like today, when I'm desperate for encouragement. Especially days like today, when even though I've toiled over the work and my thoughts, I've written just a few paragraphs. Thanks for the indirect encouragement!
