"Pick Out Something Impossible And Do It, Or Be A Bum The Rest Of Your Life"

As you know, I usually aim to provide you with original content on this page - thoughts of mine that I feel might help you as you progress through both your writing and your life (at those rare points, of course, where the two are not one and the same). Yesterday, however, I came across some thoughts that are not my own, but which I nevertheless cannot help but pass along.

These words are from Kurt Vonnegut's first novel, Player Piano. Ponder these words, and carry them in your pocket as you continue on your way.

"Sure you work!" said Alfy. "Everybody works at something. Getting out of bed's work! Getting food off your plate and into your mouth's work! But there's two kinds of work, kid, work and hard work. If you want to stand out, have something to sell, you got to do hard work. Pick out something impossible and do it, or be a bum the rest of your life. Sure, everybody worked in George Washington's time, but George Washington worked hard. Everybody worked in Shakespeare's time, but Shakespeare worked hard. I'm who I am because I work hard."

Pick out something impossible and do it.

Everybody is working...

If you want to come out on top, you have to work hard.

A prime selection of moldy words:

Life Is Holy And
Every Moment Is Precious

  1. Love this, brother, as it certainly speaks the truth. Another quote I'd have printed on a poster. I'm a firm believer that working and working hard are different concepts. It's picking the "impossible" that prompts ambition, motivation, and determination. If ceratain goals were easy to obtain, everyone would reach them, therefore decreasing their value and meaning.
