Weekend Writing Discussion: New Year's Writing Resolutions

Is there a more overused end-of-year blog topic than New Year's Resolutions?

Oh well.

I originally embarked upon a different topic for this weekend's Weekend Writing Discussion, but then I decided to save that one for next weekend. I'm not sure if anyone visits the Internet on New Year's Eve and the ensuing weekend anyway (I found out last weekend that no one visits the Internet on Christmas Eve), so I guess we'll see.

This is an exercise. While exercises are generally uncomfortable while being performed, the results can sometimes be beneficial. Maybe this will be beneficial.

Take a moment to think about it. And then decide: What resolution will I make regarding my writing in 2011?

After you settle on a resolution, post it below...and write it down for yourself as well. Tack it above your writing desk. Keep it in mind. Strive to turn that Resolution into Habit.

As for my resolution?

Well. Give me a moment to think...

Okay. Here it is:

My New Year's Writing Resolution:

Write without thinking about THE GREAT LENORE.

Of course, each of us will be planting our resolution in different soil, depending on where we are in our writing journey. As most of you know, I am at a place in my journey where I am trying to write a new novel without thinking about the way it relates to The Great Lenore or the expectations readers will have in their heads after reading The Great Lenore. This is my struggle. Some of you might have struggles that are entirely different.

The great thing about a discussion forum such as this one? We can all learn and gain strength from the trials that others are facing.

Share.
Return.
Learn.

Happy New Year.
Don't drink and drive.

  1. I've actually been thinking about this topic for the past month or so. I decided on resolutions/goals for reading and writing. Since this is about writing I'll share my goal for that.

During 2010 I had a lot of false starts with manuscripts. I dealt with a lot of discouragement, and had a bout with depressing, because I finished nothing that I started. I wrote around 100k words that went into the "trunk," and may never be looked at again.

The manuscripts fizzled for different reasons: I either got discouraged that the story was not being communicated on paper like it was being told in my head, another wasn't interesting enough to carry on with, and a last one I just didn't have the passion for. The good thing was all three were great learning experiences, and make me feel even more equipped in my writing.

Anyway, that brings me to my goal for 2011: Finish a manuscript I start. Even if I have to persevere through discouragement, a lack of passion, or any other creepy things that pops its head up.

I've been doing some pre-writing for a story now that's been invigorating, and I'm looking forward to getting on paper. I think it will be fun.

  2. Yay, you have 200 followers, congrats! A nice even number. For my 2011 goal, I'd like to finish my WIP, which is 2/3 done. I'll keep my goals simple. :)

Happy New Year to you, and best wishes for Lenore and other novels!

  3. I've been nearly done with my book for a year. I could finish in 3 weeks. Resolution: Finish it in January! (This might mean taking up another project so I can procrastinate it by finishing this one.)

  4. Mine is simple - I want my manuscript finished. I created a schedule that blocked out writing time each day, and if I can stick to that, I'll be a happy camper. I have big plans for January, so big I'm actually taking it easy tonight. Boot camp begins tomorrow.

Happy New Year, JM! I'm looking forward to reading Lenore in 2011.

  5. I just wrote a post about this myself. My writing resolution for 2011: Develop a habit! I've developed the exercise habit, now it's time to add in a writing habit.

Good luck to all on writing resolutions. Cheers!

  6. Mine is far more humble:

Draft at least 5 short stories and submit at least three (i.e., revisions, rope in friends to read 'em, etc). If rejected, get another person to read 'em and revise and re-send to no fewer than 4 publications.

  7. My goal is pretty simple and somewhat ambitious. I'm going to wrap up at least one of the three writing projects I have hanging right now. One way or the other, before 2012 comes around, I'm going to have at least one completed novel.

  8. To all - I was out of town over the New Year's weekend (Dallas; and for the record, it's a good city to visit for New Year's Eve if you want to go out of town and can't - or don't care to - make it up to NYC), and so I'm a bit late on responding to all the comments. I love the variety found on here, but it seems that one common theme unites every response. That is: A certain striving toward perseverance and consistency.

To those of you chasing a publishing deal (or a published story, or the end of your manuscript, etc.), let me say: Continue pressing! Every step brings you closer.
