And so, today I will cease being a poor correspondent for Mark. I am putting this question in *your* collective hands, Dear Reader. Help Mark out! What should he and his wife read?
Here is the original email:
Jordan! I was wondering if you could offer me a few reading suggestions. My wife and I are reading together every night before bed. She doesn't care much for fantasy, and I don't care much for chick lit. We've had some difficulty deciding beyond the three or four books we've picked out. We're trying to keep the books kind of light. Since it's right before bed we don't want a book that involves a lot of thought or mental gymnastics. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.
In a followup email, he mentioned that they are currently reading A Wrinkle In Time, and that they later plan to read both Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby.
Let's have it, people! What should Mark and his wife read? (Throw any suggestions you can think of out there; the goal here is for other people to discover excellent new reading ideas as well.)
(Furthermore, here is the short link to this post - http://bit.ly/aNf5bz - spread the word using your twitter or MyFace so that we get some extra suggestions on here!)

Addendum: I wrote "MyFace" as a joke, but apparently it's a real website. They're trying to compete with facebook; it appears that their strategy includes having bunch of typos on their front page. It's a risky play, but maybe it will pay off.
ReplyDeleteLife of Pi, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Sun Also Rises, The Poisonwood Bible, The Kite Runner, This Side of Paradise, Brideshead Revisited, The Catcher in the Rye, The Picture of Dorian Gray... Those are some of my recent favorites.
ReplyDeleteI recommend anything by Jasper Fforde. I am especially enamored of The Eyre Affair (and the rest of the Thursday Next books) and Shades of Grey.
ReplyDeleteI recommend The Spruce Gum Box by Elizabeth Egerton Wilder. Heartwarming Historical Fiction, no mental gymnastics required! http://www.sprucegumbox.com.
ReplyDeleteAh, this is great. I've really been wanting to read Life of Pi. Haven't go to it yet. I just started Stephen King's Dark Tower series. I'll also be adding Jasper Fforde to my list. Not sure if my wife will be interested, but I'll be reading.
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I appreciate everyone suggestions so far. To return the favor I recommend everyone check out The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It is a fantasy novel. If you love fantasy you'll love it even more after reading this book. If you hate fantasy this novel will make you a convert. Sanderson is probably one of the top three writer/story tellers in the genre. I whole heartedly believe that one day people will talk about The Way of Kings the same way they talk about The Lord of the Rings. If you don't like the novel you can send me hate mail.
