Colorado: Heaven's Earthly Home

At the tail end of last week, my dad and I flew to Colorado to catch the Red Sox in Denver. It was a short trip: Fly on Thursday, go the game that night, work all day from the hotel on Friday, and fly back home on Saturday morning. Dad and I were both pretty swamped with work (Dad to an infinitely greater degree than myself!), so we didn't figure to get much time for enjoying the beauty of the mountains. Yeah. This last part of the plan crumbled. And honestly, I can't say that either of us minded.

On Friday evening, we decided to take a "brief break" and drive west of Denver, to Evergreen. Evergreen is a gorgeous little town in the mountains, and at some point along the way we passed a lake with some deer hanging out by it, and we decided to stop. We walked, enjoyed the evening, breathed the fresh air (my god, that air!), and then...time to head back to the hotel? Nope! We decided to drive up into the mountains to see Echo Lake.

This is a picture I took during our drive up into the mountains.

After Echo Lake, Dad and I stopped off in Idaho Springs for dinner (if you're ever in Idaho Springs, get a Mountain Pie at Beau Jo's - some of the best pizza you'll ever have!), and finally we drove back to the hotel. We'd been away from our hotel - away from our computers and from work - for over four hours, and it was well after dark. Neither of us worked any more that night - we both went to sleep, and we tried to make up our missed work the next morning.

As I said: Neither of us minded.

That air (my god, that air!) and those views are worth about a hundred missed days of work. It might just be the most beautiful piece of our country. It might just be my own little version of heaven.

  1. My husband and I retired to Northern Colorado in 1998...from Florida. We love it here. It only takes 45 minutes from our house to Rocky Mountain National Park. I can't think of a place in the country I'd rather be.
