Atticus Books - An Online Gem To Make Your Day Explode With Awesomeness

My trials with moving The Great Lenore toward publication (the loss of my agent, the record-breaking response from new agents followed by a bunch of barely-misses) have been well-documented within the confines of this website. What a depressing topic!

How about something more uplifting? (Sure!)

Lately, I have been studying and seriously considering a number of independent publishing houses.

Of course, any writer starting out (i.e., those naive among the troops!) desires to be published by a major publishing house. Undoubtedly, there are huge benefits to landing with a major publishing house - to name a few: Greater exposure, broader channels of distribution, a huge boost to the ol' ego. Whatever. But...

...are there also benefits to landing with an independent publishing house?

Of course! And...you know what(?), someone more qualified than myself can outline these benefits for you.

But this is the one aspect I have always considered when considering independent publishing: If I signed on with an independent publisher, I would not want to do so out of necessity; I would want to do so because I had found an independent publishing house that seemed perfect! - an independent publishing house I would stick with even if I became extraordinarily successful!

Well...I believe I have discovered one such independent publisher.

Dear Reader, do not allow me to mislead you: This is not a revelation of that long-awaited Good News. This is simply me accomplishing my duty of "uncovering gems for you to enjoy."

Check out this website: Atticus Books.

Tell me this isn't one of the most appealing young publishing houses you have ever run across!

I have had some cursory interaction with their editor, Dan Cafaro, and I can tell you: At this point, if I was offered a publishing deal from Atticus and -- at the same time -- was offered representation by a top-notch agent, I would leap toward Door One.

To my mind, that is the greatest indicator of an awesome independent publisher.

Check out Atticus Books. You'll thank me for the suggestion.

P.S. "Thank yous" are allowable in forms ranging from words to books to ice cream to monetary bestowances.

  1. I would offer you ice cream. I have espresso chip in the freezer... but just in case it doesn't last, thank you.

  2. I'm feverishly working on a book right now and haven't the slightest idea what the next step is after it's complete. This is most definitely a step in the right direction (let alone any direction)! Thank YOU!!!
