In the man's defense...
1) I do consider him to be immensely talented. I just, you know, wish he would prove himself to be more than a one-trick-pony who writes Shock Factor stories that otherwise have very little substance.
2) "We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will." I've come across this quote of his several times in the last month, and I think it's magnificently insightful and wonderful. (It is taken from his novel Diary, which - for me - is among his most complete, most significant works.)
The quote again: "We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will."
Worth remembering.
Worth pondering.

Yes. There's something in that quote. I needed to hear it and, yet, I have this compulsion to call it out as a set-up. You have to believe in forever first.
ReplyDeleteFoldingfields - Good point. I'm not sure whether you believe in "forever," and - more importantly (at least, more importantly in this context) - I'm not sure whether Palahniuk does either. But...well, as I said: Good point.
ReplyDeletebut, the thing in the quote, maybe, is that we (writers) have this compulsion to make a claim on the world, with words (not our lives) despite everything against it.
ReplyDeleteI guess energy is "forever" recycled (words too).
Foldingfields - It's all rather existential. And confusing.
