It's sad, really.
Have you ever seen the Robin Williams movie One Hour Photo? That's what America's celebrity obsession is akin to.
I mean...why do people sit at home absorbed in the lives of *figures* with whom they have no contact? It makes no rational sense.
Why?
Why not instead create a life of your own that's more worthy of your attention than the life of a formless *someone*?
I have no interest in defending anything John Mayer has said (why defend it? - he said some dumb things, and he apologized), and I'm not here to cry about the lack of privacy a man like him experiences - he has made millions by providing entertainment, and in exchange for these millions his life has become public property. He understood this when he signed up for the game, and and I dare say he understands this still.
No - what I do wish to do, Dear Reader, in this small space we share, is to encourage you:
You cannot control the fervor with which everyone around you follows the lives of...well, of everyone else. What you can control, however, is how much of your own life you devote to such vapid drivel, and how much of your life you instead devote to living.
The choice is yours.
