5 Short Sentences Summing Up Shutter Island

1. I probably would have enjoyed the movie a lot more had I not read the book first.

2. (Given #1...) Shutter Island is one of those rare instances wherein a story works better as a movie than as a book.

3. This is the most un-Lehane-like Lehane book you'll ever pick up, and it's the most un-Scorsese-like Scorsese flick you'll ever see - it feels more like a child of Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick than of the two men who, in fact, sired the project.

4. (Given #3...) It's a good story, if not a truly great one, and Scorsese is his usual masterful self - elements of the movie feel like the movie was released in February instead of during awards season (uh...which was exactly the case), but it is nonetheless worthy of both your time and your money.

5. I will continue to say it with every new movie he makes: Leonardo DiCaprio is the best actor of his generation.

Bonus sentence: My man-crush on Leonardo DiCaprio has doubled.

By the way, anyone seen Bar Refaeli lately? Yeah, Leo is awesome.

  1. Sorry, I will continue to say this: DiCaprio's career peaked with "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," in 1993.

That's why God made so many of us, though, is so we can disagree on things like this!

  2. Levi,

Leo's career did not begin until 2002.

    Since then:

    "Catch Me If You Can"

    "Gangs Of New York"

    "Aviator"

    "The Departed"

    "Blood Diamond"

    "Body Of Lies"

    "Revolutionary Road"

    "Shutter Island"

Not a lot of weak links in that chain.

Of course, I know that a lot of people still think of him as "Leomania" Leo, which makes it difficult to take him seriously.

I admit...I would not have posted my thoughts on him being the best actor of his generation unless I thought it would cause some disagreement. That's what's so wonderful about opinions, no? ;-)

  3. His career began with "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (where, by the way, I honestly thought they had cast a mentally challenged actor) continued with "Titanic" and "The Man in the Iron Mask" and has only gotten stronger with the films you mentioned. I LOVE Leo. He is one of my favorite actors--I always believe whatever role he is playing. He makes me believe. Okay, now I think I'm proving the slight crush I have on him. I'll stop while I'm ahead. :)

  5. I love the brevity of this review. My interest is piqued yet I feel I won't approach the film under your influence. Also: brave move saying the story works better as a film than as a novel.

  6. Sorry, I count seven weak links and an unknown (to me) in that chain.

  7. I had a roommate in college that used to say Leonardo DiCaprio was a talentless hack. I told her she was being ridiculous and couldn't judge him based solely on Titanic, which was the only DiCaprio performance she had actually seen.

These days, she agrees that he deserves every bit of the praise he has received.
